This is a guide to help you choose which curb strap to use.
For your bit with leverage to work correctly, you need to add a curb strap/chain behind the horse's chain. The chain/curb strap will prevent the bit from rotating too far in the horse's mouth, which can cause discomfort and divide the pressure between the neck, mouth, and chin. If you ride with a curb bit and no curb strap or a too-loose curb strap, you can risk getting too much pressure in the mouth but also get the bit rotating too much in the mouth, causing it to be in a bad position.
You can vary the effect of your bit by changing the curb strap material and shape. Here's a quick guide to explain the different options!
The traditional curb chain of stainless steel is the standard chain included in all Fager's bits with leverage. This chain is made to keep the horses light in the hand, as it gives more effect when you take the reins than a leather chain does. This can be suitable for horses that can lean on the bit and get unresponsive.
The traditional curb chain in stainless steel but with a leather cover. It gives the same light feeling in the hand but is better if the horse is sensitive to rubs, as it's more gentle on the skin and coat. It does not absorb the pressure like a thicker silicon cover but is more gentle to the skin and coat thanks to the smooth surface.
The non-swivel curb chain gives a similar effect to the traditional curb chain but has a unique shape that makes it flat and cannot be twisted around. This will make it easier for you to use. The chain loops are slightly bigger than the traditional chain, dividing the pressure a bit more, which can give a more gentle pressure.
The wide chain has a similar effect to the traditional curb chain bit with big loops. This chain has bigger loops but still fewer loops, making the pressure points fewer. The big loops divide the pressure over a larger area, making the effect slightly gentler without sacrificing the light feeling.
The curb chain guard is a silicon cover you can put on the traditional curb chain. The thick silicon will divide the pressure more gently and absorb the pressure. This makes it a good option for sensitive horses where you want to use a curb bit but still want the horse to lay more on the bit. It's a good option to add to your chain if your horse tends to overreact with a traditional chain
The curb strap in Leather is a user-friendly option as it can be put on any curb bit without hooks and is easy to adjust. The curb strap effect is gentler than a chain as it doesn't have multiple minor pressure points but a more divided smooth pressure. However, it does not absorb the pressure as much as the silicon guard.
